Lawrence F. O’Brien, III has been described by the Washington Post as a “major Democratic operative.” He was selected by The Hill newspaper as one of the “Top Lobbyists” in Washington, DC in 2007, 2008, 2009. Mr. O’Brien is actively engaged at the highest participation levels both with the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee (DSCC), currently serving as the Chairman of its premier program, the Legacy Circle, and with the House Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, as a member of its Speaker’s Cabinet and Team 100 groups.
In March 2006, the DSCC conferred upon him what it describes as the “highest honor the DSCC can bestow,” Lifetime Membership status in its Majority Trust program. In a letter to Mr. O’Brien, Senator Chuck Schumer, Chair of the DSCC, said: “…I can’t think of a more qualified Democrat to receive this honor…All of the Senate Democrats know how valuable your dedicated support for our campaigns has been.” In an April 2009 note to Mr. O'Brien, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "You have been a great friend for many years and I appreciate your tireless support.You have been in the trenches with me throughout so many successful battles..."
Mr. O’Brien served as a member of the Carter Administration Treasury Department from 1977-1979. He worked extensively with the Congress and various Executive Branch departments on matters involving income, estate, excise and energy taxes and trade issues.
He was an associate attorney from 1972-1977 and then a full partner in the law firm of Breed, Abbott & Morgan for the period 1979-1983. He was a full partner in the law firm of Dewey Ballantine, in its Washington, D.C. office, from 1983 until 1993. He withdrew in 1993 to co-found the firm of O’Brien♦Calio with Nicholas E.Calio. That lobbying partnership ceased its operations upon Mr.Calio’s departure into government service in January 2001 and was succeeded by The OB♦C Group.
He is a past President, founding incorporator, and an original and still serving board member of the Foundation for the National Archives of the United States, a tax-exempt charitable and educational organization affiliated with the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery in the National Archives, dedicated and opened in 2004, is named in memory of Mr. O’Brien’s deceased father.
Mr. O’Brien received a B.A. degree with honors from Harvard College in 1967 and a J.D. degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1972. He served a 13-month tour of duty in Viet Nam with the U.S.Army in 1969-1970 and was awarded the Bronze Star.
